Team India is set to play Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting 9th Feb 2023. India has a lot at stake to play for in this series as a series win would raise India's chances to confirm its place in the World Test Championship Final. India fought very hard for the spot in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship where we eventually lost to New Zealand. In the current cycle of the World Test Championship India are at the No.2 spot in the points table with 58.93% with Australia at the No.1 spot with 75.56%. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is at No.3 with 53.33%.
Following are the qualification scenarios for Team India:
Scenario No. 1
India win the Border Gavaskar Trophy vs Australia 4-0, 3-1, or 3-0
The above will secure Team India's place in the World Test Championship Final irrespective of the result of the series played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. This is the best-case scenario for Team India.
Scenario No. 2
India win the Border Gavaskar Trophy vs Australia 2-1, 2-0, or 1-0
In the second scenario, India's qualification will depend on the factor that Sri Lanka does not win more than 1 test match against their away series vs New Zealand.
Scenario No. 3
If Team India loses the series, they will be heavily dependent on Proteas, West Indies, Kiwis, and Sri Lanka. India will not want to be in this situation as the dependence on other teams and on the result of other series will be very high which reduces the chances.
However, India is the strongest team in the world when playing at home and is yet to be defeated at home in the World Test Championship. Let's hope we can win the Border Gavaskar Trophy with Scenario 1.
