Nagpur Test First Innings Summary

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first in the first match of the much-awaited Border Gavaskar trophy.

Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins

Australian opener Usman Khawaja who is touring India for the third time got his first chance to bat and was dismissed cheaply at 1(3) by Siraj in his first ball of the match. In the very next over David Warner was clean bowled by Mohammed Shami and Australia was 2-2 in the third over.

Ravindra Jadeja

Steven Smith and Labuschagne stitched a crucial partnership of 82 runs and were looking very comfortable at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja came out all guns blazing post lunch and dismissed both the batters alongside Renshaw who got out for a golden duck.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey and Handscomb got a 53 runs partnership in quick time but Ashwin dismissed Carey to reach the 450wickets in Tests landmark following which the Australian innings were wrapped up quickly as they were bowled out for 177.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up another important fifer 22-47-5. India should make the most of the dominant position they are in and should get a healthy lead.

Rohit Sharma vs Pat Cummins

The pitch does not look as bad or dangerous as the Australian first-inning total and it was all about good bowling and poor application from the Australian batsman. Maybe they should’ve opted for the warmup match instead of practicing in nets. Apart from Smith and Labuschagne, all the other batsmen looked clueless. Credit to India bowlers who did not give away anything.
